A spray tan is a safer approach to natural looking glowing skin. It's active ingredients is DHA, Dihydroxyacetone, derived from sugar cane formulated into a sugar water solution sprayed onto the skin with a fine mist. The sugar solution goes through a fermentation process that interacts with our melanin and creates an even looking tan that lasts 7 to 10 days. Think of a cut apple left to ferment on the counter, it turns darker over time; so to the sugar water solution turns the skin darker when given enough time to develop.
The spray tan solution is a sugar water solution which is clear in color. Bronzer is added to the solution as a guide for the spray tan artist to see the lines and to create an instant glow. However, the solution needs time to develop with the skin approximately 4 to 8 hours and is then rinsed off. If the bronzer is rinsed off too early, no tan will be seen as the DHA, sugar water solution, did not have time to interact with the melanin in the skin and to formulate a beautiful tan.
Dihydroxyacetone (DHA) is a naturally derived, colorless sugar compound that is the active ingredient in most sunless tanning products, including spray tans. DHA can be derived from plant sources like sugar cane or sugar beets through a natural fermentation process. Think of a cut apple turning brown as it ferments. When derived from sugar beets, DHA can smell sweet. DHA can also be derived from glycerin. DHA comes as a fine white powder that reacts with the amino acids in the top layer of skin to cause a reaction that tans the skin after left for some time by a natural fermentation process.
The percentage of DHA in the sugar water solution creates the depth and tone of the tan. Over-application of DHA and over processing can result in an orange looking tan. Our solution contains between 10% to 15% of DHA. Higher percentages and heavy application are not recommended and do not develop into a natural glowing tan.
Our solutions contain different base colors to match your undertone. Using the opposite color on the color wheel neutralizes undertones for an even looking tan.
Red base - great for olive skin.
Green base - great for warm skin - counters red hues.
Brown base - great for neutral skin - gives a deep chocolate look.
Violet base - great for cool skin - looks great on blondes.
Blue base - neutral, looks great on everyone.
A light even application reduces wetness and sticky residue. However, when aloe vera is used as a moisturizing agent in the ingredients the spray tan can feel a bit sticky at times. Lighter layers are applied to give time for the aloe to dry in between passes.
Our solution contains anti aging and skin-firming ingredients including jojoba oil, avocado oil, coconut oil, green tea, aloe vera, cucumber extract, and chamomile which all have great benefits for your skin.
DHA is the active ingredient in most spray tanning solutions It is recommended to leave the solution on for 6- 8 hours after application giving it enough time to develop with the skin, then lightly rinsing off in the shower. Only rinse until you see the water in the tub in clear, then stop and pat dry. Rinsing is solely to rinse off the bronzer and is not a regular shower. No soap is needed. Some soaps especially bar soaps will strip the tan. After 24 hours a regular shower is okay using ph balanced soap. A liquid body wash is most preferred.
No, a spray tan does not protect you from the sun's harmful rays. Spray tans don't contain UV filters, so they allow the sun's rays to penetrate your skin. Use a broad spectrum, oil-free, lotion sunscreen with an SPF of 30 or higher. Avoid aerosol or spray-on sunblock, as they can dry out your spray tan and cause it to fade unevenly.
A spray lasts anywhere from 7 to 10 days and fades as the skin is constantly creating new skin cells on the epidermis level. Lighter applications can fade faster. However, good skin prep and using spray tan friendly soaps that are Ph balance, avoiding heavy sweating, chlorine, and ocean water will contribute to the longevity of the tan.
After your spray tan appointment, you will need to stay dry for 4-8 hours to let the tan develop and avoid a streaky tan. After that, you can rinse off the solution with water only. 24 hours after your spray tan is when you should begin to use soap and moisturizing lotion. Try to avoid using bar soap. Look for lotions that are spray tan friendly which do not strip the color such as Cetaphil Moisturizing Cream. Tanning lotions and tanning mousse can be used in between spray tans. However, over application of DHA will result in orange looking skin. DHA is the active ingredients in most tanning products. Use tanning products with caution after a spray tan.
When a spray tan is applied properly it looks very natural and undetectable. Over applying DHA will turn the skin orange. Applying the mist in the correct amount using the proper color, according to your skin's undertone, will result in a very natural looking tan.
According to the FDA, spray tanning is considered safe when DHA is applied externally to the skin. It is not recommended to breathe it in. Keep your mouth and eyes closed while spraying the face.
Exfoliating before a spray tan is important because it removes dead skin cells and unclogs pores, which helps the tanning solution adhere evenly and last longer. This results in a more even and longer-lasting tan that looks and feels better. Exfoliating can be done by rubbing your body with an abrasive dry washcloth, rubbing off all dead skin cells. You may moisturize your skin using a product that is alcohol free, mineral oil free and petroleum free up to 8 hours before. Moisturizing and showering too close to your spray tan will alter the skin's ph balance and reduce longevity of the tan.
There is alcohol in artificial spray tanning products which can be drying to the skin. However, moisturizing agents are added to our solutions to help reduce dryness. It is recommended to moisturize up to 8 hours before your tan with alcohol free, mineral oil free, and petroleum free moisturizer and apply moisturizer 24 hours after rinsing off the bronzer to keep the skin hydrated for a healthy glow. Mineral oil, petroleum, and alcohol in the moisturizer will fade the tan faster.
Shaving naturally exfoliates the skin and most shaving products will strip the color. It is recommended to shave or wax prior to your appointment.
Bath bombs containing tan remover are used to remove it. Dove bar soap and swimming in a chlorinated pool may do the job just as well.
You may tan whichever parts of your body you feel comfortable with, except for intimate areas. Leaving panties and a bra will leave tan lines. Dark colored undergarments will not be ruined with the spray tan, and any bronzer washes off in the laundry.
Wear loose fitting and dark colored clothing to your spray tan appointment. Your spray tan will always rub off a little on your clothes but will easily come off in the wash. Tight jeans and leggings can leave line marks from the spray tan.
Raindrops or sweating right after your tan may result in a polka-dot tan. Please bring an umbrella if it is raining, and do your workout after rinsing off the bronzer.
You will be given stickers, to step on, which protect the bottom of your feet while receiving your tan. You may wear flip flops home or any regular shoes.
A pH balance soap is best to use after your spray tan for longer-lasting results. Choose soaps that are sulfate free body wash and gentle moisturizing cleansers. Pacifica Body Wash (Target), Cetaphil Ultra Gentle Body Wash, Hempz Original Body Wash, Shea Moisture Body Wash are some options. Some recommend, only using soap to wash the necessary areas, and rinsing the rest of the body with water only.
A tan toner is a product used to maintain the pH balance of your skin at home after getting a spray tan allowing the tan to last longer. It often comes in combination with a tanning moisturizer and can increase the longevity of the tan.
Facials, waxing, and shaving must be at least 24 hour prior. Stay away from products containing alcohol, mineral oil, petroleum and artificial fragrance 3 days before your tan. Do not apply perfume before your tan. Use soaps which do not alter the skin's ph before and after your tan. Dove bar soap will leave an invisible film on the skin that will not allow the tan to penetrate properly resulting in streaky lines. Exfoliate your skin to remove dead skin cells especially the night before and do not put anything on your skin up to 12 hours before. No shower at least 3 hours before. The hot water alters the skin's ph and ability to absorb the tan. Do not wear any makeup or lotions to your tanning appointment. The skin should be clean and dry before being sprayed.
We recommend getting your spray tan 2-3 days before the big day. The tan needs some time to develop and settle to look it's best.
